Using the CKEditor to edit HTML on your Drupal Blog

I was surprised that Drupal, advertised as a content management system, does not ship with an HTML editor.
I do understand why there isn't one enabled by default. We use Drupal because we can set it up the way we want it. Everyone has their own preferences, and when it comes to an HTML editor, I have mine. Whenever I set up an HTML editor for a client at work, I use CKEditor.
CKEditor is the latest name for FCKEditor. I've heard more than a few giggles from people reading the name FCKEditor and creatively placing a 'U' in the name. The name change was a good decision. It's chic. It's by Calvin Klein. (No not really).
Installing CKEditor
CKEditor is a stand-alone Javascript application designed to be integrated into any CMS. As such, you'll need to download two components:
CKEditor itself
Just download the package. You'll have a place to put it next.
The CKEditor module
This is the Drupal module which will integrate CKEditor with the Drupal system. Unpack this module into your modules directly. It contains an empty directory called CKEditor where you place CKEditor itself.
When you unpack CKEditor in the ckeditor directory of the module, make sure you do not create a second directory called ckeditor and end up with the files located two levels down instead of one.
Also make sure that you enable CKEditor permissions for your user roles.
Using CKEditor only for specific text areas
After you have uploaded your files in the right location and enabled the CKEditor module, all of your text areas will be replaced with an HTML editor. This may not be what you want.
You can configure the CKEditor to appear on specific text areas. Below each text area, CKEditor lists an ID for that text area like so:
CKEditor: the ID for excluding or including this element is post@node/add/post.edit-body.
You can copy and paste the ID (the post@node/add/post.edit-body part is the ID), and configure CKEditor to only display for that ID.
To do this, click to the CKEditor Configuration web page:
- Administer
- Site configuration
- CKEditor
- Click the edit link beside the Default profile.
- Click on the Visibility Settings tab.
- Click the Include radio button.
- Paste the CKEditor ID you copied into the text area.
- Scroll down and click Save.
You'll probably have to complete this process twice; once for the edit content page, and again for the create content page. For the edit content page, your ID will have a number which only applies to that particular piece of content. To make it apply to all content, replace it with a *.
For example, change
post@node/2/edit.edit-body
to:
post@node/*/edit.edit-body
