How to Dynamically Submit a Form from Within Drupal: Robotize your Drupal Form Submissions

So I've been going through the book Pro Drupal Development* for a while now.  I'm a Drupal programming virgin, and from browsing the web it appears this book is the best guide out there for programming Drupal 6.  The handbook and other web-based documentation have been a barrier to me -- this book gets you in with lots of small, demonstrative examples.

One of the great facets of Drupal is its form API.  Forms are set by building up an associative array and returning it from a (surprise!) callback function.  Since the form's structure is in code, you can submit forms dynamically, and Pro Drupal Development provides an example of this:

$form_state['values'] = array(
  'user_name' => t('Marvin'),
  'favorite_color' => t('green')
);

drupal_execute($form_id, $form_state);

Wow, I thought, this is nifty.  I copied the code over to my own application, changing the form_id and the values where appropriate, and here was the result:

Hmm.  I wasn't expecting that one.  The book's author (he's a great author by the way) includes a word of caution that the form assumes the user making the request is the user submitting the form.  Good to know, but there are a couple of more tidbits that would have helped a lot more:

  1. Drupal is assuming the form's definition is in the current module, or in a file that has already been included.
    So to submit, for example, a node create form, you have to include the right code from the node module:
    		module_load_include('inc', 'node', 'node.pages');
  2. And if you don't include the right op in your form state, drupal_execute won't do anything, and won't tell you anything.
    That's right, it will happily execute your code but not submit the form.  You need to include the Save op code in your form state array:
    		$form_state['values']['op'] = t('Save');

These two items had me scratching my head for a good while, and I hope it clarifies things for you if you've been googling for help.
